Happy little bluebirds fly

storm2Base-jumper used to put it on the car radio for the drives with his elderly father.   It reminded him of his dad.   His dad died last May.  We were on our way home from a poker game when we got the call that he had gone into a coma.  We arrived and his dad’s face was so sad, his skin already going yellow, and the morphine not yet working.  I can’t hear this song without thinking of Basejumper, a Marlboro clenched in his teeth, the jittery way he was always doing something other than driving.  It’s such a delicate song for a man with calloused hands.

If you can’t get to the song, it’s the Hawaiian version of “Over the Rainbow” by Israel (Izzy)  Kamakawiwo’Ole.   It’s a beautiful version of the song, ending with a version of “What a Wonderful world.” It steadies the nerves.

“I see skies of blue and clouds of white…”

I guess in the soundtrack of my life there are a lot of characters.  I’m a sucker for characters.

If a flop comes out with three different suits, say heart, club, diamond, it’s called a rainbow flop.  It doesn’t help you if you’re trying to get a flush.

There isn’t a universal standard for the chip colors so you have to be flexible. Sometimes red is a hundred, sometimes red is ten thousand.  As a poker player you have to be able to keep your bets straight.   If you’re wearing sunglasses, sometimes it’s hard to really even discern the different colors.

We all know the color of money.  I re-watched the classic movie The Hustler this weekend.  The one where Paul Newman gets his thumbs broken.  It’s black and white, so you can’t even see his beautiful blue eyes.  My eyes are green, the color of money. The woman in The Hustler gives Paul Newman a lighter.  I found it funny, as I gave Base-jumper a lighter for his birthday.  What do writer chicks give to gamblers?  Zippo lighters, of course. I was surprised there was a poker game in the movie.  It’s off camera, but it happens.  The Color of Money was the sequel, and for that Newman won an Oscar.  We all know The Hustler is the better movie.  The original.

I hate it when a quote is attributed to the actor, this was written in a movie script, by a writer, not by Paul Newman as the image says.  But it’s the best I can do for an image today.

“In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Roy G. Biv.”
